Establishing winners

Sometimes when you play bridge ,to win the most tricks you need to establish winners. Look at the below hand to get an idea of what this means, but before you do, have a think.

How would you see the bidding going? South has dealt and is the first to bid.

If you want to see how it can be done, read on.

The bidding went:

South - 1 diamond     West - 2 clubs   North - 2 spades   East - pass

South - 2 no trumps   West - pass       North - pass          East - pass

The contract is 2 no trumps by South.

Get a pack of cards and deal out the hands in the example.

Have a think? Whose lead is it, and what will they lead?

West leads the 4th highest of their longest and strongest suit, the 6 of clubs. You discard the 5 of clubs from dummy. East plays the king of clubs and you discard your lowest club which is the 2.

East who won the trick, now leads the 4 of clubs to return partner's lead. This is won by the ace in west's hand.

West then leads another club which you win in hand with the queen of clubs, discarding the 5 of hearts from dummy.

Now that you have the lead, you can win all 5 tricks in diamonds if you play smart.

Have a think. How would you go about it?

If you want to see how it can be done, read on.

You should lead a small diamond to the queen in dummy. Once you see that West has no diamonds, you should be able to count that East has 5 diamonds.

Take the trick with the queen and then lead the jack. Then lead the 7 of diamonds. East has no defence.

If East plays the 10 diamonds, you take it with the king and the ace and 9 are yours too.

If East plays low, you win with the 9 diamonds and the ace and king are yours too.
